Broxton Rocks Mitigation Bank (Broxton Rocks) is a large, regionally significant mitigation bank comprising approximately 1,591 acres located in South Georgia on the southeastern bank of the Ocmulgee River. The bank is situated contiguous to the Horse Creek Wildlife Management Area to the north and the Broxton Rocks Preserve to the south, forming an extensive and ecologically connected conservation landscape.

The site is characterized by a unique geologic setting associated with a four-mile-long sandstone outcropping of the Altamaha Grit, part of an estimated 15,000 square miles of sandstone underlying Georgia’s Coastal Plain. The bank includes seepage streams, hardwood wetland forest floodplains, and forested uplands with wetland and riparian buffers.

Types of Credits Available

Broxton Rocks offers potential mitigation credit types including forested freshwater, forested saltwater, herbaceous freshwater/brackish, and herbaceous saltwater credits. Credits are derived from habitats such as freshwater marsh, brackish marsh, saltwater marsh, hydric pine flatwoods, and mangrove swamp.

Natural community classifications include Florida Natural Areas Inventory (FNAI) communities—Freshwater Marsh, Wet Flatwoods, Salt Marsh, and Mangrove Swamp—and Florida Land Use, Cover and Forms Classification System (FLUCCS) codes 641, 625, 642, and 6120. These systems are primarily coastal and fire-adapted.

Broxton Rocks provides compensatory mitigation for permitted projects with impacts to jurisdictional wetlands, streams, and other waters of the United States pursuant to Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and permitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
